Second Cohort of GHI Direct Admits Announced

Seven incoming freshmen make up the second class of students to receive direct admissions into Wabash College’s Global Health Initiative (GHI).

Zachary Baty, Max Brumett, Parker Cox, Abdul-Rahman Ennin, Connor Gamble, Carson Granger, and Sam Nurkiewicz were chosen from a competitive group of applicants to make up this cohort. The group represents six Indiana cities and towns.

“365体育博彩_365体育app-彩票*官网 are excited to welcome the second group of students who come to Wabash as part of this direct admit program,” said Eric 365体育博彩_365体育app-彩票*官网tzel, professor of biology and Global Health Initiative director. “365体育博彩_365体育app-彩票*官网 have worked hard to create a context in which they’ll be able to learn more about global public health through classes, immersion, and internships. This work benefits all of our students by providing opportunities to meet public health professionals, read and discuss current topics in community health, and engage directly in this work locally, regionally, and internationally through our work with the GHI-Peru Association.”

This program allows first-year students to engage immediately with the GHI, a Wabash co-curricular program for students with interest in global public health. Directly admitted students are guaranteed an immersive travel experience in global health to Peru, South America, as part of the global health class, and a summer internship in public health following their freshman or sophomore years.

The direct admit program is supported by the Kolisek Health Innovation Fund.

Zachary Baty '29Baty, from Muncie, Indiana, applied to become a direct admit to gain experience in the medical field. He intends to major in biology and minor in global health and neuroscience. A graduate of Delta 365体育博彩_365体育app-彩票*官网 School, Baty will also be a member of the Wabash swimming and diving team.

Brumett, from Crawfordsville, Indiana, has a passion for medicine and public health and enjoysMax Brumett '29 learning languages and other cultures. He plans to major in biology or chemistry and holds a goal of working in drug research and development post-graduation. A graduate of Crawfordsville 365体育博彩_365体育app-彩票*官网 School, Brumett seeks to have a tangible impact in the communities he engages with through the GHI.

Cox, from Kokomo, Indiana, has a career goal in healthcare and hopes to gain exposure to world Parker Cox '29healthcare systems through the GHI. A graduate of 365体育博彩_365体育app-彩票*官网stern 365体育博彩_365体育app-彩票*官网 School, he looks forward to the challenge of a Wabash education and being a positive addition to society.

Ennin, from Zionsville, Indiana, has plans to become a psychiatrist after graduation. A graduate of Zionsville Community 365体育博彩_365体育app-彩票*官网 School, he applied to the GHI Direct Admit program to learn about themedical field and bolster his ability to help people.

Gamble, from Yorktown, Indiana, comes from a family of medical practitioners who have global health experience. AAbdul-Rahman Ennin '29 graduate of Yorktown 365体育博彩_365体育app-彩票*官网 School, Gamble values the role of community and the broad base provided by a liberal arts education. He was actively involved with the Muncie walk-in clinic during high school.

Granger, from Crown Point, Indiana, hopes to major in biochemistry and participate in clubs and extra-curricularsthat impact others positively. A graduate of Crown Point 365体育博彩_365体育app-彩票*官网 School, he plans to attend medical school with the goal of becoming a plastic surgeon. Both his father and older brother attended Wabash as well.

Connor Gamble '29Nurkiewicz, from Zionsville, Indiana, is using this direct admit to better prepare himself for medical school with the goal of becoming a cardio-thoracic surgeon. A graduate of Zionsville Community 365体育博彩_365体育app-彩票*官网 School, he already has experience in the medical field having shadowed both an open-heart surgeon and NICU personnel for two weeks

The GHI Direct Admit program is for students with a strong interest in community health and the many factors that determine it. This program provides students engagement with communities, leadership opportunities, and the chance to learn from global public health professionals in local and international contexts.Carson Granger '29

Benefits of the program include the ability to connect with other community-minded students early in their college career; to develop important skill sets that employers, medical schools, and graduate schools value in their applicants; and to learn about social and environmental determinants of health and help address health disparities in local, regional, and international communities.
